Hi Jonkman
I am currently running the IEA 15MW reference wind turbine (RWT) with a semi-submersible floating platform，my OPENFAST terminated normally and also outputted some results, but I found that the value of some parameters related to twist, for example,TwstDefl1,TwstDefl2,TwstDefl3,TTDspTwst have been constantly 0. I have already turn on all the parameters related to degrees of freedom except TeetDOF in ElastoDyn, so I’m curious why the values of the above parameters have always been 0, and which parts of my settings may still have problems? and below is my OPENFAST running process.

Dear @Xiang.Wang,

It looks like you are modeling the structural dynamics of the blades and tower in ElastoDyn, which does not have blade and tower torsion degrees of freedom. So, these twist-related outputs of ElastoDyn will always be zero.

Best regards,

Hi, Jonkman
Thank you for your reply. I understand the previous question. But due to my lack of proficiency in using OPENFAST, the new issue I am currently facing is that OPENFAST can still run normally, but there are many parameters that do not have valid outputs, parameters related to Root such as RootFxc1, RootMxc1 and some other parameters related to blade root load are all zero, so I am curious about which parts of the incorrect settings caused the above situation. below is my OPENFAST running process.

Dear @Xiang.Wang,

It looks like your OpenFAST simulation is completing normally.

The ElastoDyn blade-root outputs are zeroed in your case because you are running a simulation with the blade structural dynamics modeled in BeamDyn rather than in ElastoDyn. In this case, you can find the proper blade reaction loads in the BeamDyn output instead.

Best regards,

Dear @Jason.Jonkman
Thank you for your answer，I found a lot of meaningful output data in BeamDyn. But at the same time, I also discovered a problem，I am currently exploring the BeanDyn nodal output module. I noticed that you and another colleague have already discussed this issue on July. He mentioned that when sets “kp\_total”=“station\_total”=50, a maximum of 50 results can be output. But when I set “kp\_total”=50, only 41 node outputs were obtained. After setting “kp\_total”=“station\_total”=50, OPENFAST reported an error. What do you think may be the reasons for the above problem? below is my OPENFAST running process.

Dear @Xiang.Wang,

I’m not sure I fully understand your question, but the key points and stations are independent things in BeamDyn. The key points define the reference curve/axis of the beam. The stations define the beam properties relative to the reference curve/axis. `kp_total` and `station_total` can be set independently, but you must have `kp_total` number of lines in the key point definition in the BeamDyn primary input file and `station_total` number of sectional properties in the BeamDyn blade input file. When using trapezoidal quadrature, the number of nodal outputs is tied to `station_total`. The error you are receiving implies that you changed `station_total` without changing the number of sectional properties.

Dear @Jason.Jonkman
Thank you for your reply，I think I understand the meaning of “kp\_total” and “station\_total”. But now another question arises, you mentioned that when using trapezoidal quadrature, the number of nodal outputs is tied to “station\_total”, I followed the initial values and set “kp\_total” =50,“station\_total”=21, then OPENFAST can terminate nomarly, but I can get 41 nodal outputs, for example, the parameter Fxr for blade 1, I can get outputs from B1N001\_Fxr to B1N041\_Fxr. Is the problem mentioned above a normal phenomenon? How can I know the position of these 41 calculation points in the blade？

Best regards,

Dear @Xiang.Wang,

I said that the “when using trapezoidal quadrature, the number of nodal outputs is _tied to_ `station_total`”; I didn’t say that the number of nodal outputs _equals_ `station_total`. You can increase the resolution of the analysis/output nodes by setting BeamDyn input parameter `refine` greater than unity. I’m assuming you are setting `refine`=2, which will subdivide the gap between each station by 2, adding `station_total`-1 number of nodes, so, the total number of nodes in this case would be 2\*`station_total`-1.

Best regards,

Dear @Jason.Jonkman
I am currently studying the ElastoDyn module of the OpenFAST v3.5.3 with my case set as CompElast=1 and CompAero=2. However, I have encountered the following three issues during my study:

1. OpenFAST displayed two errors in the output window: “Nodal outputs section of ElastoDyn input file not found or improperly formatted.” (marked as ERR below), and, “AD15 Nodal Outputs: Nodal output section of AeroDyn input file not found or improperly formatted. Skipping nodal outputs,” as shown in the figure below. I wonder why these errors occur, and how can I avoid them?

2. I used Visual Studio 2022 to analyze the OpenFAST source codes where the above errors occurred. The ERR appears at line 255 in FAST\_Subs.f90, as shown in the figure below. However, when I tried to step into the subroutine ED\_Init by the “Step into” command in debug mode, the program skipped directly to the next command at line 257, so I couldn’t analyze the cause of the ERR from the code. This brings me to my 2nd question: Why can’t I step into the subroutine ED\_Init in debug mode by the “Step into” command?

3. After searching, I located the ED\_Init subroutine, as shown in the figure below. However, when I set some breakpoints inside the subroutine in the ElastoDyn module , I kept getting the message “The breakpoint will not currently be hit.” This leads me to my 3th question: In debug mode, although the ED\_Init subroutine has executed, why is the breakpoint inside the function not working?

Best regards,

---

Dear @Yangyang.Li,

Here are my responses:

1. You can always ignore warnings about “nodal output” (these are warnings not errors). These simply warn you that you that the nodal output section is not included in your input file(s) (but this section is optional anyway). For more information about the “nodal outputs” of ElastoDyn and AeroDyn, see the documentation on readthedocs: [4.2.7.2. Input Files — OpenFAST v3.5.3 documentation](https://openfast.readthedocs.io/en/main/source/user/elastodyn/input.html#nodal-outputs) and [4.2.1.3. Input Files — OpenFAST v3.5.3 documentation](https://openfast.readthedocs.io/en/main/source/user/aerodyn/input.html#nodal-outputs).
2. I’m not sure why you can’t “Step into” `SUBROUTINE ED_Init()` in the debugger; I would expect that to work.
3. The variable declaration statement is not executable; I would specify a break point after the declaration statements.

Best regards,
