TMDI implementation in OpenFAST StC module — is NLR (ex-NREL) involved in this work?

Dear @Jason.Jonkman

I recently came across a preprint titled “Structural Vibration Control of Offshore Wind Turbines Using Tuned Mass Damper Inerter in OpenFAST: Implementation, Validation, and Illustration” by Tariq, Li, De Luca, and Giaralis. This paper could be found on the following link:

The authors implement a multi-directional Tuned Mass Damper Inerter (TMDI) within OpenFAST’s Structural Control (StC) module, deriving the governing equations of motion and validating the implementation against independent numerical models, with an application to the IEA 15MW reference turbine.

I wanted to ask whether NLR (ex-NREL) has been involved in this work or even has validated the implementation for safe and reliable use of the community.

Thank you in advance,

Best regards,

Riad EL HAMOUD

Dear @Riad.Elhamoud,

I’m now tagging @Hisham.Tariq on this topic, the lead author of the paper you found.

NLR has communicated with @Hisham.Tariq on the topic of TMDI and @Hisham.Tariq has submitted a PR to the OpenFAST GitHub repository: First changes towards adding 3 DOF-Independent TMDI by hishamtariq19 · Pull Request #3101 · OpenFAST/openfast · GitHub. @Andy.Platt of NLR is reviewing the PR before merging, which we expect to release in OpenFAST v5.1.0 this fall.

Best regards,
