FAST.Farm Output

When perform simulations in FAST.Farm i am having some issues regarding the outputs. The output “RtCtAvgT1” always appears at 0. Do you know why that might be happening?

I’m not sure what would cause RtCtAvgT1 to be zero if the rotor thrust is not zero. Are you sure your post-processing the correct output of FAST.Farm? Can you share your FAST.Farm primary input and output file?

Well, I see that RtCtAvgT1 is not zero at time zero (but is in fact 1.37), but it is zero later in the simulation (from 13 s and later). The time series you shared only shows a subset of the results, so, it is difficult to understand what is happening. Also, 1.37 is quite high for Ct, suggesting that you may not have initialized your rotor speed or blade pitch angle properly in your OpenFAST models, based on the mean hub-height wind speed you are simulating. How are the wind turbines responding (how do the OpenFAST results look) for this case?

I am using the IEA Wind 15 Megawatt wind turbine, with a wind speed equal to 3.5 m/s, which I believe should lead to a TSR of around 20. The output for this wind speed leads to around that value.

I’m not sure, but I’m concerned that the large start-up transient could be causing problems in FAST.Farm. I would first suggest initializing your OpenFAST model better for the conditions you are simulating. At 3.5 m/s, this would mean initializing RotSpeed to 5 rpm and BlPitch to 4degrees for the IEA Wind 15-MW reference wind turbine. How do the OpenFAST and FAST.Farm results look then?

Thanks for sharing. AeroDyn output RtAeroCt for T1 looks reasonable now, but FAST.Farm output RtCtAvgT1 is still incorrect. To clarify the difference between these two outputs:

  • RtAeroCt is the instantaneous aerodynamic thrust coefficient of a rotor as computed by AeroDyn for a given OpenFAST model
  • RtCtAvgT1 is the low-pass time-filtered value of the rotor thrust coefficient as computed by FAST.Farm for turbine T1. To compute this, the rotor thrust distribution from OpenFAST is passed to FAST.Farm, which is then low-pass time filtered and spatially averaged.

I’m still not sure why RtCtAvgT1 is incorrect, but I’m wondering if it is tied to the low-pass time filter. Can you try reducing f_c from DEFAULT to something small, such as 0.0007 Hz? Another thing to try is reducing DT_Low from 13 s to something smaller like 1 s.

I tried reducing f_c to 0.0007 Hz and reducing DT_Low to 1 s (both individually and then at the same time) but the RtCtAvgT1 is still 0.

Are you seeing an impact from the upstream turbine on the downstream turbine? Have you tried visualizing the wake (e.g., by setting NOutDisWindXY = 1? If so, are you seeing a wakes?

I looked at the source code and believe there is a bug in that the output RtCtAvgT# is not set properly for the polar wake model after time zero. This doesn’t seem to have any downstream effect other than the incorrect RtCtAvgT# output. We’ll get this fixed in a future release.
